A Farm Visit With BC Blueberries

bc blueberries, didar farmsAgriculture and farming are a part of my family history going back hundreds of years. From what I’ve been told by my parents, both sides of my family have been farming in India forever. So it was only natural that my grandparents who immigrated to Canada in 1980 took up farming jobs.

My Papa worked in every area from planting and harvesting, to green houses and canaries, but my Bibi had just one seasonal job; berry picking. She spent many summers working on blueberry farms as a picker. I remember both of them coming home at the end of the day with blue stained fingers and their daily punch cards ready to be added to the stack. My job was to calculate how much berry they had picked at the end of each week so they could report back to the farm owners. bc blueberries, pink chai

As a child I spent quite a few summer days on the farm myself. I would pick early in the morning and add to my grandmother’s bucket. Once the sun came out though I would retreat to a shady spot under the bushes and wait until it was time to go home.

Recently my family and I had a chance to visit a local u-pick farm – Didar Berry Farm, and experience blueberry picking together . It was so nice to see the kids get excited about picking fresh berries, and get little outdoor activity at the same time!bc blueberriesbc blueberries, didar farms

Keeping the kids entertained during the summer can be tough (and expensive). I found blueberry picking to be the perfect family activity. We got outside, got a little exercise, and came home with something healthy & local for snacking.bc blueberriesbc blueberries{I love this picture of Mr. T and I … it’s like I did a Charlie’s Angels style blowout for the farm!}bc blueberries

As an added bonus we were joined by a number for friends from the South Asian Bloggers Network for a group berry picking day! It was so much fun to see everyone’s kids, meet their spouses, and have some laughs. The perfect morning with family and friends. bc blueberriesIf you are looking for a fun family activity this summer, give berry picking a try!
