Bollywood Movie Night with the Hamilton Beach Party Popper

hamilton beach party popperAt the beginning of this year I was approached by the team at Hamilton Beach Canada about joining their blogger ambassador program – #HBSocialKitchen. I thought about it for about 6 seconds and then said yes. I’m mildly obsessed with kitchen appliances, and I love Hamilton Beach products so it was an easy choice. Throughout the year I’ll be testing out a variety of products, offering my thoughts, and creating some super fun recipes. You can also see what the other Hamilton Beach blog ambassadors are cooking up by following the hashtag #HBSocialKitchen on social media.

The first appliance I got to play around with is the Hamilton Beach Party Popper. This baby pops kettle style corn, and can pop up to 24 cups at a time! Movie night anyone? We eat a lot of popcorn at my house, especially during our weekly family movie nights, but we’ve never had a popcorn popper so I was eager to test it out.

I was a bit unsure if I would fall in love with the appliance – because it seems so easy just to pull out a pan and pop on the stove. However, there are some definite advantages to the machine; you don’t have to babysit the popcorn or splatter yourself with hot oil, and you don’t end up with a bunch of un-popped or burnt kernels. Until I saw the Party Popper in action, I had no idea how many kernels I was wasting – I thought that was normal.

We’ve been using the popper almost daily and love how quickly we can whip up a post-dinner snack, or even a lunch box snack for the kids, but you know me…I have to add a desi touch to all things – including popcorn! So I started to play around with the idea of a popcorn flavour inspired by Jhalmuri – which is a popular street food in India. And of course; Indian inspired popcorn has to go with a Bollywood Flick!bollywood movie night, masala popcorn {If you are hosting a Bollywood themed movie night serve your popcorn in bags adorned with your favourite actors!}

Jhalmuri Popcorn Recipe:

So I have to start by saying this is sort of my riff on jhalmuri or murmura chivda and not an authentic recipe. Feel free to play around with the spices or amounts I’ve listed – this is more of a technique than a precise recipe.

I started by heating about 2 tablespoons of butter in a pan and adding 1/4 tbsp turmeric, and a 1/4 tbsp of cumin powder. To this I added 4 cups of popped kernels.

masala popcornThen I added in the juice of half a lime, half a chopped red onion, a 1/2 cup of roasted peanuts, and 2 tbsp of fresh chopped cilantro (I really like cilantro!)masala popcornYou can also add salt to taste.

I have to admit that this popcorn is not easy to eat with your fingers and we ended up using spoons to scoop it up – but it was delicious! Paired up with one of our favourite Bollywood flicks {Satte pe Satta, Naukar Biwi Ka, or Naseeb are always on repeat on our ” date nights”}, it was the perfect snack for a cozy evening at home.

After that goofy photo intermission, I think it’s time to answer the all important question;  what do we think of the Hamilton Beach Party Popper? It’s a hit at the Pink Chai house because it’s easy to use, cleans up quickly, and makes delicious popcorn without excessive use of salt and butter. There is just one thing I have to let you know – the kettle insert gets very hot, so if you are getting your kids to help with the popping, make sure they don’t touch it. Otherwise, pop away and do let me know what your favourite popcorn toppings are in the comments!

    We love popcorn in our house and Indian style popcorn sounds fantastic! I’ll definitely be trying it out! How big is the popper? That’s the one negative about popcorn poppers, they are so bulky!

      The Party Popper is pretty big when it’s put together, but what’s really nice is that you can take it apart and the popper portion fits into the bowl for storage. that’s actually a great perk of this machine – it pops directly into the bowl that you can use to eat out of.

    What a cool way to make your popcorn have an extra kick to it I totally never thought of adding ingredients like that to something as simple as popcorn! I used to have a popcorn machine as a kid and have very fond memories of using it with my grandma perhaps it’s time to invest in another!
