Slow Cooker Kheer {Plus Giveaway}

slow cooker kheer recipeKheer is the ultimate Punjabi dessert. It’s comfort food, it’s tradition, and everyone’s mom makes the best kheer! It’s served often at weddings, festivals, and holidays. Unfortunately, it rarely makes an appearance at the Pink Chai House,  (mainly because I have a real talent for burning kheer). If you are cooking this delicious rice pudding at the stove, you have to stand there and babysit it the whole time, stirring religiously so that the sugar and milk don’t stick to the bottom of the pot. You see where I’m going with this?

Well, I recently got my hands on a Hamilton Beach Connectables Slow Cooker, and my ‘kheer babysitting’ dilemma was solved. You can literally just drop the milk, sugar, and rice into the slow cooker and walk away. It’s so easy, I feel a bit cheeky telling you that there is a “recipe” for my slow cooker kheer below. slow cooker kheer

My mom and most of my aunts have raved about their slow cookers for years, and I’ve avoided them because I seriously thought, I don’t need another kitchen gadget. As I discovered with my electric kettle a couple months ago though, I was wrong. Yes, a slow cooker takes up some precious space in your pantry (and I have a very small pantry), but it is so worth it. Right after I made the initial batch of kheer I tried making sabut moong dal. It took about 6 hours but it worked out beautifully. I know a lot of people use slow cookers for dinner help, but I think this baby is going to save me from lunch time hangryness this winter. I can pop some dal or soup ingredients in it while prepping the kids school lunches, and by the time the afternoon meal break rolls around, my food will be ready. No more left-over Halloween candy as lunch for this mama!slow cooker recipe

Slow Cooker Kheer Recipe (If you can call it a recipe)

1/2 cup of kheer rice (you can also use Basmati if that is what you have on hand)
1/2 cup sugar
3 1/2 cups of milk
4-5 cardamom pods crushed to powder

Just drop all the items into your slow cooker, set the temperature to low, and walk away for 4.5 hours. I did come back and stir mine around the 2 hour mark just to make sure it hadn’t stuck to the bottom.

Once your kheer is done and ready to be served, you can also garnish it with cashews, almonds, or raisins. Although I have to admit, I’m more of a puritan when it comes to kheer, no toppings for me!slow cooker recipe

So now that I’ve convinced you that you need a slow cooker, wouldn’t it be nice if you could win one? The lovely folks at Hamilton Beach are going to give one of you lovely readers (so many lovelies in my life;) a Connectables Slow Cooker of your own. There are many reasons to love this machine, but my favourite features are; the power outlet on the back for connecting to other slow cookers or appliances, Stay or Go® portable design with clip-tight lid, and the fact that the lid and crock remove for easy cleanup in the dishwasher. Amazing right?
