Summer Bucket List

It may not look like it this morning, but today is the first day of summer! Before we know it the kids will be out of school and we won’t have a moment of peace to get anything done. Every year I have great grandiose plans of all the things I am going to do in the summer, but we never do them. Suddenly I look up and it’s the end of summer and time for the back-to-school madness. This year I’m making a list – a summer bucket list.

The key to my list is that it’s more like a road map. There are no actual gold stars for completion and if I don’t feel like doing something I don’t have to do it. It’s more about holding the intention of having a fun and memorable summer. Since today is the 21st of June, I chose 21 things to put on my list – clever huh. Here it goes …

1. Swim in the ocean (or a lake or even a pool!) I haven’t been swimming for at least 6 years, how sad is that? This summer I want to get back into the water, which means I’ll have to get my act together and buy a swimsuit.

2. Plant a kitchen herb garden. I have zero gardening skills and every plant I’ve ever owned has died, but I’d like to give it another try.

3.Make a water park in the back yard. Z has had this on her summer list for 2 years and we’ve never done it. This year I’m all about getting out the slip & slide and kiddie pool and going crazy!

4. Make home made ice cream. This is a skill I have dreamed of having for years. How cool would it be to have your friends over for a sundae bar with home made ice cream? 4b. Host a sundae bar.

5. Print and organize photo albums. This is actually a rather large undertaking, but I would like to have physical albums that we can look at of the kids pictures. I’m not sure how far I will get on this one, but I definitely want to start.

6. Read outside as often as possible. I am really bad about getting outside with the kids in the summer. I just don’t like to play at the park – this is my way of meeting them half way. I’ll take a book and lay in the shade while they do the crazy things that kids do.

summer bucket list7. Take a road trip. I love road trips, Mr T not-so-much. I would like to take a driving trip where we stop at viewpoints along the way and just take it the scenery. I have feeling this one is going to be a hard sell.

8. Visit local attractions. There are so many amazing attractions in our area that we have never been to as a family, sad right? On the top of our list are the Vancouver Aquarium and the HR Macmillan Science Centre.

9. Declutter the house. I’m not much of a hoarder as it is, but I’m starting to feel like there is too much stuff we don’t love or need hanging around our place.

10.Eat healthy fresh meals. By the time the end of school rolls around at our place we’ve usually started slacking off in the eating department, summer is a good time to reconnect over the dinner table and healthy meals.

11. Update the blog. There are so many little things I’d like to do with the graphics, logo etc … maybe one summer evening.

12. Go to a u-pick farm. I’d like my kids to see where food actually comes from!

13. Create a Pink Chai martini. I’ve always wanted a signature drink, kind of like James Bond. So why not name it a ‘Pink Chai’?

summer bucket list14. Cuddle with my kids. This one is more of a reminder to slow down and enjoy the unscheduled moments. The early morning cuddles and late night chats.

15. Learn to style my hair curly. Since God gave me curly hair I might as well learn to embrace it.

16. Sew. So much fabric, so little time! I really want to make the time and space to sew for me and Z this summer. How amazing would it be for part of her back to school wardrobe to be hand made. Gives me the warm and fuzzies!

17. Teach my kids to cook something. I think cooking is a seriously undervalued skill and time to start teaching my not-so little ones.

18. Take better care of my skin. No more falling asleep with make-up on, drinking more water, going to bed at a decent time. The whole nine yards.

19. Practice taking pictures in manual. I so want to take pretty artsy photos!

21. Spend time in solitude. I’m craving nothing more than solitude and silence these days. Must make sure I find some time to spend with myself this summer!

    A great list!
We are campers – so we definitely get the road trip, spend time outdoors, swimming, local attractions etc etc. having a 3 year old, I don’t get much chance to sit and read while they explore the woods, the beach, the snack hut (of course) because she is one busy little girl. But cuddling around a bonfire eating Smores is definitely a great way to end a summer day. We also usually go to the Zoo each summer. and spend a week at the grandparents.
Whew…I need a nap just thinking about it all! And …packing. ugh.
Looking forward to that signature drink! I love Chai Lattes

Firstly – I’ll go on a road trip with you! Secondly, pertaining to #8 you should take the kids to minter gardens in chilliwack, I read that this is the last summer it will run as the owner has decided to close it done after 33 years.
