5 Simple Lohri Traditions to Start with Your Family

One of the best things about Lohri is that you don’t have to do anything extravagant to celebrate it. There are so many ways to celebrate Lohri and make it special. We’ve rounded up our favourite ways to make Lohri a festive time at home and spoiler alert– they’re super simple!

Lohri Snacks
Reinvent popcorn by giving it a desi twist when you add some sesame seeds and jaggery. This’ll be sure to desify it up.

Lohri S’mores
A North American ritual becomes Lohri-fied when you use the Lohri bonfire to heat up your s’mores.

Saag & Makki Di Roti
This Punjabi specialty is sure to put you in the Lohri mood. Whether it’s for lunch on Lohri or dinner that night, saag and makki di roti is a classic!

Watch a Punjabi Movie
Snuggle up and put on your favourite old school Punjabi films or catch a new one. I know it sounds cheesy, but we watch Christmas movies as a family around the holidays. Now there aren’t really any ‘Lohri movies’, but a few Punjabi films the kids and I have enjoyed are – Sardarji, Jee Ayan Nu (Classic), Manje Bistre, Gudiyan Patole, and Jatt & Julliet

Visit a Local Farm!
The idea is to help your kids and family appreciate and understand the work of farmers. Remember, Lohri is a harvest festival — a time to celebrate the soil and the food it gives us.

More than anything, bring in stories about Lohri! Tell your kids what your Lohri was like growing up and tell them how your parents celebrated their Lohri. It’s all about keeping the celebration of Lohri alive.
