The most common questions I get on Instagram are always about my hair care routine, hair styling tips, and most recently tips for growing hair. Honestly friends, I can’t take all the credit for having hair that grows well – it’s partly genetics. But I do have 5 tips for growing your hair that aren’t always obvious.

This is actually an old post from the archives that I’m updating with some new pictures and re-sharing. Not surprisingly, these are still the same tips I use today. 

I did a quick google search and found that the average person’s hair grows about 6 inches a year, and in all honesty, I think my hair probably grew somewhere between about 6-8 inches in the last year. So it’s not exceptional growth, but I think what makes the difference is that I have minimal breakage.

Give Yourself a Weekly Scalp Massage. 
I’ve talked before about my love of hair oils and my weekly oiling treatment, and I still believe this plays a big role in my hair growth. People often talk about the importance of trimming your ends for growth, but new hair comes out of your scalp! Massaging your scalp with oil, or even in the shower increases blood flow and brings more nutrients to the roots of your hair – where growth actually happens.

Eat Nutritious Foods & Vitamins.
We all know that our skin looks better when we eat healthy foods and drink lots of water, but that also applies to our hair! Another trick I’ve learned over the the years is that whenever I take a vitamin that is developed for hair, skin, and nails my hair definitely looks healthier and falls out less.

 

Braid Your Hair at Night

Braid your hair at night to prevent breakage.  Anytime I forget to braid my hair, I wake up with so much hair on my pillow I’m convinced that when I leave my hair open it breaks more, and broken hair is weaker and less likely to grow. 

Use Good Quality Elastics
Repeat after me; I will never use an elastic band intended for office supplies in my hair! (I have actually seen this multiple times). Also avoid those cheap elastics with the metal closure, if your hair catches in the metal part it will break. My go-to elastics are Goody Ouchless Elastics, for me and Z. 

Recently I’ve also been using scrunchies a lot – they never get caught in your hair or pull it out. Another way to prevent breakage. 

Switch up the placement of your pony or bun

If you wear ponytails a lot , don’t tie the pony at the exact same spot every day – this will create a breakage line in your hair. Try to lower the pony sometimes! The same goes for a bun, whether you use an elastic or not to hold it in place. Always tying your hair in the same spot causes certain spots to become weak. 

Learn to Use Your Hair Tools Correctly
It might seem strange to some people, but I like to learn about all the hair tool options out there. I’ve spent time researching and testing the best hairbrushes for me. I have a paddle brush that was kind of expensive ($30) but it doesn’t pull my hair out so I love it. I also learned that if I put my flat iron on a lower setting it still straightens my hair. A lower heat setting is better for my hair. 

One really important tool you need if you want to prevent hair fall and breakage is a wide toothed comb. Use this tool for gently removing knots from wet hair (never use a brush on wet hair!)

What I’m getting at here is that it’s your hair – learn what works best for it, understand the tools and products you are using on it, and be gentle with it! It’s the only hair you have for the rest of your life, you might as well learn to work with it!

    Great tips! I love my hair long and recently got it cut shorter than I would have liked. Your blog reminds me, I need to spend some me time and give myself a scalp massage regularly, to promote growth and fitt that invigorating feeling… Thanks for sharing!
