A Hint of Indo-Western Fusion

outfit idea, pink chai livingIt’s finally the season for my favourite wardrobe pieces – my darling dresses – to come out and play! To me dresses are the most flattering look on my body shape, and the easiest thing to pull out of my closet. No fumbling with matching tops and bottoms, just one piece dressing; you can’t beat that. This season I’ve been adding some subtle Indo-Western touches to my dresses through accessories and shoes, and it’s a trend I plan to stick with. No point in having a wardrobe full of pieces that are only used for Indian weddings and events.

One of my favourite additions to a dress is adding a Punjabi jhutti and payal. I used to be really self conscious about wearing very obviously desi pieces like this with Western looks, but now I think it’s all on how you pair up your pieces. Here I’ve worn an ‘almost nude’ jhutti so it doesn’t distract from the dress, and actually makes my legs look longer (bonus!). The payal is also very simple so it pairs well with the shoes.

I also love pairing a heavier payal with pumps for a more dressed up look. My rule of thumb is; nude shoes + payal is a yes, but if I’m wearing a patterned shoe or an embroidered jhutti I stay away from payal. For me the key to Indo-Western dressing is to add hints of desi to your outfit, and not over-accessorize.outfit inspiration; payal with western outfitsoutfit inspiration, pink chai livingIf you are looking for more easy ideas for infusing a little Indo-Western into your wardrobe, check out this Pinterest board I created for inspiration!
