“You know those days when you get the mean reds?”
“The mean reds, you mean like the blues?”
“No. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long; you’re just sad, that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling? …Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany’s. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it. Nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that’d make me feel like Tiffany’s, then — then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name!” ~ From Breakfast at Tiffany’s
The words above are from my favourite scene in the classic Audrey Hepburn film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Two Sunday’s ago, I also found a beautiful little shop that has every reason to be proud of itself; Soirette Macarons & Tea. The stunning (and delicious) macarons at Soirette wait patiently behind their glass case for the the perfect buyer to bite down into this little moment of bliss. The Soirette shop is a treasure itself tucked away in the downtown core of Vancouver. I had the opportunity to visit the store for their Breakfast at Soirette event, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
The dress code was Old Hollywood Glamour so my first instinct was to go with a black dress (a la Breakfast at Tiffany’s), unfortunately the weather was pretty bleak when I left home that morning so I wasn’t really feeling a fancy dress. Then I remembered this one photo I had seen of Marilyn Monroe in some black printed cropped pants and this outfit came together.
It’s not exactly the same as Marilyn’s fun look, instead just loosely inspired – giving me the confidence that I was dressed appropriately for the event, but definitely not costumey. It was fun to play with a special event look like this, and I even had my hair blown out with a round brush to create a more voluminous look when I had it coloured the day before. (More on the hair colour later this week!)
The morning was so much fun, and there were many good eats. The best discovery of May for me was learning that macarons are gluten free! Since I couldn’t eat most of the breakfast food appetizers, I cheated a little and had a few extra macarons…and the chocolate ganache (shhh don’t tell anyone). A huge thank you to Shobna of Soirette for inviting me out, and thank you to Christie Graham for the photos.
