Chai Chat: My Afternoon Chai Ritual

Mr. T has a ritual he almost never misses; every night after dinner he has milk & cookies. He’s done this almost every night for the 16 years I’ve know him. Now, from a health perspective it might not be the best idea, but as far as self-care goes it’s kind of amazing. No matter what we’ve been through that day, he closes off his evening with a comfortable, familiar ritual.

Last year I was inspired to start a ritual for myself, but the timing was different, and mine involved chai of course! I tend to feel the most frazzled around 2:30 pm in the afternoon. By this time I’ve already been awake for about 10 hours, helped the kids get off to school, and worked a full workday, and it’s just about time for the kids to come home from school! It’s usually about the time that I realize I skipped lunch again too.

chai is always a good idea

To combat my afternoon crankiness, I started making an after school snack for the kids {& me}, and sitting down for a cup of chai while we snacked. This helped for a few weeks, but I was still feeling frazzled and disconnected when they got home, so I shook things up a little and started having my chai break at 2pm, so I can have a little quiet time just for me before they get home. How do I make sure I don’t miss my chai time/me time? My super secret trick is in this week’s Chai Chat video.

I hope this week’s Tea India Chai Chat inspired you to take a few minutes out of your day just for yourself. If you decide to follow my lead and add a snack to your afternoon chai ritual make  sure your cupboards are stocked with healthy choices. My go-to choices for “chai-nashta” are:

  • mixed nuts
  • besan ki nankhatai {chickpea flour cookies}
  • rice crackers with mango chutney
  • banana bread
  • muffins
  • poha {keep one of these jars in the fridge}
  • pinni

Also, don’t forget; you don’t have to stick to the same old chai everyday either! I love a good black chai, but I also love boiling the cardamom flavoured tea bags from Tea India in a pot of milk and enjoying ‘dhood-chai’ {milk tea} sometimes – especially in the winter.
