Chocolate Dipped Besan

chocolate dipped besanWithout a doubt, besan is my favourite Punjabi mithai. What’s not to love? It’s made of chickpea flour, ghee, and sugar, and is pure deliciousness. Of course, I can never leave good enough alone and need to mess with perfection sometimes (hello, gulab jamun cupcakes).

One afternoon I was overcome with this crazy idea that I should try dipping besan in chocolate. I did the first batch pictured above with some dark chocolate I had at home, and then did a second batch with milk chocolate. I guess it depends on your taste preferences but for me the dark chocolate was a winner, and my kids loved the milk chocolate.

This is basically the simplest mithai hack ever, but there is one key – use good chocolate! This is not a place to use baking chocolate, break out your best stuff. I actually want to try using a dark chocolate with orange, or a chili chocolate next time I make this. chocolate dipped besan

Next time you have a chai get together at your place, I highly recommend serving up some chocolate dipped besan. It’s a change from the everyday and will really get the Aunties talking about your mad kitchen skills (even though it’s embarrassingly easy to make)!

Ingredients:
Pre-made besan squares
Melted Chocolatechocolate dipped besan

Start by slicing the besan squares in half so they aren’t as thick as a regular piece of besan. We are adding sweetness with the chocolate and don’t want to give anyone sugar shock. It helps to keep the besan out at room temperature for a little while before cutting it. chocolate dipped besanchocolate dipped besanchocolate dipped besanMelt your favourite chocolate and dip besan pieces. (I told you, embarrassingly easy!)

Let the chocolate set for about half an hour and you are ready to serve up a plate of yum. If you decide to try this recipe let me know what you think, or tag me in a pic, I love to see your kitchen experiments.

Besan is a pretty common Punjabi mithai, maybe it’s also called something else? It’s basically chickpea flour, ghee, and sugar – can’t go wrong with that!
