DIY Bollywood Quote Candles

Bollywood quote candles. This was one of my first DIYs for the blog, but still one of my favourites. Bringing it out of the archives just in time for Diwali. I love making these up for Diwali party favours and hostess gifts around this time of the year. (Originally posted in May 2015).

I love candles, and there is almost always one lit at my house & at my office. Lighting a candle is kind of like a ritual for me. In the morning at the office it marks the start of my work day, and at home after the dinner dishes are cleared, it’s a symbol of winding down time. I love it when people give me candles as gifts, so I’m forever choosing them for presents too!

This DIY is mix of my two favourite types of gifts – something personalized & candles. You can do them with a dialogue from a film, song lyrics, or like I did for this original set, with movie names. My first crack at these Bollywood quote candles featured some nostalgic film titles; Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Maine Pyar Kiya, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Over the years I’ve created different versions for gifting, but I think they would also make adorable wedding favours or centrepieces. (Someone please hire me to plan your over the top Bollywood wedding)

Supplies:
White candles*
White tissue paper
Scotch tape
Wax paper

Inkjet printer
Hair dryer

*I’ve tried a few times to create these on coloured paper, and while it technically works, the candle and tissue are never really the exact same colour. I much prefer the finish of white on white for this project.

Directions:

Start by designing your sayings on your computer and printing out a test print. Once you are satisfied with the size of the font and how it will sit on the candle, we are ready to start printing on tissue.

Tape one sheet of tissue onto a regular piece of printer paper. Use just two to three pieces of tape on the edges. Then feed the paper as you would for regular printing through your machine and print your saying on to it.

My printer is a Cannon Pixma MG6420 and I had no issues with it at all. Of course use your discretion on this, but I think as long as you only use one sheet of tissue your printer should be fine.

Cut out your saying and a piece of wax paper large enough to cover it. Place the tissue paper (right side up – so you can clearly read the saying) directly on the candle. Cover with wax paper, and slowly heat up and transfer with your blow dryer. Just remember to keep your heat source moving around or you’ll melt the candle too much and create a mess, and please be careful! Even if you are using a hair dryer it can get pretty hot on your hand. After about 2 minutes of blow drying the tissue paper will become completely adhered to the candle and you can pull the wax paper off and enjoy.
