Family Food Goals: 2017

About five years ago I started getting serious about annual goal setting, and one of the areas I took into consideration was the food my family eats. I know it sounds kind of silly to set goals and intentions around grocery shopping and meal plans, but it’s so important. aloo bhartha[Aloo bhartha – takes 20 minutes to prepare and the kids love it!]

What we eat and the fuel we put into our bodies is vital, yet so many of us treat our meals like an afterthought, or a nuisance even. (I used to). We take the time to educate ourselves on new apps and computer software but don’t really understand the ingredients in our foods – see any red flags?

I shared my family’s food goals in 2015 and 2016, and I’ve made some progress on both those lists, and there are some areas that still need work, but I’m not giving up. Maybe this is the year I hit all my goals!

FAMILY FOOD GOALS 2017:

1. Add a variety of fruits & vegetables to the menu
We eat vegetables at least 3-4 times a week with dinner, but I tend to stick to a few regulars; potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. I’d really like to branch out and introduce the kids to a wider variety of veggies this year.

2. Substitute the foods we love with healthier options
This is the year that I’m really going to figure out what makes one box of pasta healthier/better than the others. Same goes for finding healthy swaps for things like soups, breaded chicken, and juice boxes. My family isn’t big on change so this could be a tough one, but I’m on it.

3. Teach the kids more recipes
My kids are starting to get comfortable in the kitchen and assisting more often, but I’d love for them to be able to cook a full meal by the end of the year.

4. Prioritize eating at home over cooking from scratch
This one is really hard for me, but a must. Our life is so busy right now that Mr. T and I honestly don’t always have time to cook, and cooking from scratch is nearly impossible some weeks. I’m going to research my options and buy the healthiest convenience foods, and we are going to keep our family dinner routine going.

5. Waste less
Veggies that go soft, meat that comes out of the freezer and is forgotten, and bread that goes stale. These are all things that happen at our house, but not anymore. We are going to shop thoughtfully, buy only what we need, and use up everything before going shopping again.
